Speak up

For the longest time I was ashamed of my depression. It was something I didn't talk about, not even to my family or closest friends. I let the depression define who I was; I gave myself a label that wasn't true. As I've mentioned before one of the reasons I started Beeing Jess was to share my journey. It has helped me tremendously to talk openly about my struggles and battle with depression. 1 out of 5 people suffer from a mental illness and unfortunately it's a subject that is taken very lightly.

Now that I am a part of the mental illness community, it’s important that I speak up about it. I have found many social media outlets that are devoted to spreading the awareness of mental illness and the stigma that comes with it. I have shared my story with different websites that promote mental illness awareness in hopes to inspire others to do the same. If my story can help at least one person battle his or her struggles that is enough for me.

We live in a world where people portray a "perfect" reality rather than embracing their flaws. I hope that you have the courage to speak up, share your story, and most importantly realize that you don't have to be perfect. Embracing your journey becomes easier once you realize that you aren't alone and so many people are fighting the same battle. Depression is a constant battle and it SUCKS, but turn a negative into a positive. Speak up, educate yourself, and inspire others!

love, Jess
